Student Disability Servicesovides consultation and advocacy for students with documented disabilities. Services include reviewing documentation, identifying appropriate accommodations, writing letters of eligibility for professors, establishing appropriate services and offering assistance in the transition to college academics. In addition, students suspecting a disability may consult with Student Disability Services to evaluate the most effective course of action foaddressing difficulties in learning.

WHO? Students with documented disability or a student who suspects a disability
WHY?

Disability should not be a barrier to accessing an education

  • A disability is defined as a physical, intellectual, or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Education is a major life activity.
  • Accommodations do not alter essential elements of the course.
  • Accommodations are established to access the essential elements of the course.
    A ccommodations are not established to guarantee success.
  • If professors have no verification of disability, they are not obligated to make accommodations.
WHAT?

Documentation from a licensed professional
Documentation must include:

  • A clear statement of the diagnosed disability
    Complete educational, developmental, and medical history as it relates to the diagnosis
    A list of all assessment instruments and relevant scores used to make the diagnosis
  • A description of the functional limitations resulting from the disability
  • A statement of why the disability qualifies the applicant for accommodations requested
  • A list of the recommended educational accommodations

Individual Education or Learning Plans (IEP and ILP) are insufficient.

HOW?

Academic Accommodations are arranged

  • A student with a disability presents documentation from a licensed professional for review.
  • The student and a Student Disability Services Specialist identify appropriate accomodations and services.
  • Letters of eligibility for accommodations are written for each professor. The student’s disability is not disclosed to the professor.
  • The student presents the letters to the professors.
  • Student Disability Services Specialists are available for continued support.
WHEN?

Summer through the first two weeks of school (For students with existing documentation)

Make appointment with Student Disability Services Specialist

  • To learn about accommodations and support at the college level es
  • To present documentation and discuss eligibility for services
  • To establish appropriate accommodations and services
