St. Olaf College is interested in the health and well being of our students. Therefore, we require all enrolled students to have health insurance. Two options exist for you in securing health insurance. You may continue coverage that you currently have through your family or you can purchase insurance through Specialty Risk Group/USI Affinity, an insurance broker.
The policy available to St. Olaf students is an accident and illness plan that provides coverage for diagnosed illnesses and injuries due to accidents. The plan will provide coverage for a full twelve (12) months from August 15, 2009 to August 14, 2010.
Whatever your health insurance has been in the past, please consider the following issues when choosing between the available options for 2009-2010. First, many home-based HMO plans do not provide adequate coverage outside of your home area. Emergency treatment is often the only acceptable coverage when received outside of the HMO network of providers. Secondly, if you are considering study abroad, many plans offered do not provide coverage while outside of the United States. We encourage you to review your current health insurance policy with your parents to ensure that it sufficiently covers you while pursuing your academic interests at St. Olaf.
Finally, for those of you who are considering Division III sanctioned athletics, the College carries a separate insurance policy to cover injuries sustained in these activities. That policy has a $1,000 deductible. This $1,000 can be billed to whatever other insurance policy the student athlete has in place. The policy described in this letter will pay for the first $1,000, serving as coverage for the deductible. Your current policy may not provide athletic coverage. If you are a student athlete, you will need to complete the Student Health Insurance Form prior to providing athletics with your general health information.
All St. Olaf students are required to complete the Student Health Insurance Form prior to July 1, 2009. Failure to do so will result your student account being billed a non-refundable insurance premium of $760 for the Student Health Plan through Specialty Risk Group/USI Affinity.
You may choose from one of two options: 1) waive the Specialty Risk/USI Affinity Insurance and the $760 cost by providing proof of other current, valid health insurance, or 2) enrolling and purchasing insurance from Specialty Risk Group/USI Affinity. Please indicate your choice by logging in to the Student Health Insurance Form with your St. Olaf student ID number.
