Vision for America: An Ever-Expanding Embrace, Congressman Keith Ellison

Hosted by Pi Sigma Alpha as part of the PSA Spring Forum, and the Martin E. Marty Regents Chair in Religion and the Academy

Congressman Ellison speaks at 1:15 p.m. Reception to follow.

Congressman Keith Ellison will speak about his experiences with religion and politics in the United States.

Ellison represents Minnesota Congressional District 5, which includes the city of Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs. He served in the Minnesota State House from 2003 until his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2006. During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives he has sat on the Financial Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Ellison is the first Muslim to be elected to the United States Congress, and is the highest ranking Muslim elected official in the United States. In 2007, he performed his Congressional oath reenactment using a two-volume Qur’an published in 1764 that was previously owned by Thomas Jefferson. Sparking controversy for his choice to use a Qur’an instead of a Bible, Ellison has since been an advocate for Islamic causes on a national level, and has recently testified before Congress during House Homeland Security Committee hearings on Islam.
