Career Guidance Session: Digital Media and Strategy

Since Lauren Melcher graduated from St. Olaf in 2008 with a major in English and a concentration in management studies, she's held three jobs she loved (and loves) -- and none of which she ever planned holding when she was in school. Along the way, she's picked up experience in community networking, emerging media strategy, nonprofit and corporate communications, and how to remain nimble when the job world is changing underneath your feet. In this discussion session, she'll share a few tips about:

* Standing out to potential employers in a competitive job market * The modern resume and importance of an online professional identity * How to relay being a "digital native" into a career world that expects you to have hands-on experience and deliver measurable results * What kinds of internships and work experience you should consider if you are interested in a career in digital media development, public relations, advertising or marketing

Lauren provides strategic social media direction for global PR agency Weber Shandwick clients as part of the Digital Communications practice in Minneapolis. Her specialties include crisis communications, online community management and integrated campaign development for consumer brands, nonprofits and agriculture and food industry clients (including Cargill, Pioneer and Dairy Management International). Prior to Weber Shandwick, Lauren was a communications counselor with Neuger Communications Group and managing editor of Alive Magazine. She serves on the board of directors of the Minnesota Interactive Marketing Association.
