Join fellow Rochester Oles for their next meeting of the Rochester Oles Book Club at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, at Downtown Kitchen, Historic 3rd Street SW, in Rochester.
November's book choice is "The Age of Miracles" by Karen Thompson Walker.
What would the end of the world be like if it ended, not with a bang, but with a long, whimpering sigh? It may be that slower is much harder to deal with. In this moving, disturbing novel, the planet's rotation slows, stretching out the cycles of days and nights, affecting the planet's gravity. Viewed through the lens of 10-year-old Julia's life with all its attendant difficulties and challenges, the story captures us with its painful parallels and its deeply tragic telling. Julia's heartbreak becomes ours.
Karen Thompson Walker has woven an intricate, deeply moving tale, never compromising the realism of her characters or the story. This is a coming-of-age tale that challenges us to weigh in on the very value of life, to find renewed hope in the midst of uncertainty.
RSVPs are welcome, but are not necessary. To RSVP or with questions, contact Sheri Eichhorn in the St. Olaf Alumni and Parent Relations Office at 888-865-6537 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
