This is the fourth in the Cultural Conversations Series. Facilitated by Professor Jennifer Kwon Dobbs, this conversation is entitled, "Ethnic Studies and Student Leadership."
Description: In 1968 at San Francisco State University, a diverse student coalition formed to question why the contributions and histories of communities of color were absent from the curriculum. Beyond seeking celebration, these students wanted education in social justice and sought to take back their institution. Their ground-making leadership led to the formation of Ethnic Studies and paved the way for generations of students who have since inherited and benefited from this rich interdisciplinary tradition. What is this history of student voicing and visioning, and how might it help inform our current roles as student-leaders? To stimulate conversation, we will watch short film clips about the SFSU student strike and recent clips about efforts at other institutions to ban Ethnic Studies as "anti-American."
