Michael Hurley, a career CIA operations officer, led Agency personnel and U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan immediately after the 9/11 attacks. He also was a leader in the Kosovo and Bosnia conflicts and in the international intervention in Haiti for the Agency and served as National Security Council director for the Balkans.

He served as a Counterterrorism Special Advisor for Middle East Security to Special Envoy General James Jones and CT Special Advisor to Senator Sam Nunn, Ted Turner, and their Washington, D.C.-based Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI). He was Special Advisor on Counterterrorism to the U.S. State Department and a Senior Counsel and Team Leader on the 9/11 Commission, directing its counterterrorism policy investigation and co-authoring its best-selling final report.

Currently, he is president of Team 3i LLC, an international strategy company and a special advisor to RoboteX and Palantir Technologies, both Palo Alto-based innovative technology companies. He continues to advise the co-chairmen of the 9/11 Commission and is a consultant to the Homeland Security Project and the Bipartisan Policy Center. He lectures widely on national security issues and regularly appears on National Public Radio, the BBC, CNN, and a range of international broadcast media as a commentator on counterterrorism.
