Bio: Furio de Tomassi is a statistician-economist by academic training with a degree from Sapienza University in Rome. He started his professional career in development in a consulting firm in Rome, contributing to the "Planning Study of IMO State" about Nigeria.
In 1984, he started his UN career as a UN Associate Expert in Burundi assisting the government in the analysis of the first Population Census and in the preparation of their second Census. In 1988, he joined the UN Secretariat in New York after passing the National Competitive Exam in demography. Following two years of internal migration studies, from 1990 and 1992 Furio was in charge of statistical capacity development projects in 10 Least Developed Countries in Africa. Since 1992, Furio has been associated with the UN Associate Experts Programme.
Furio is the UN System Focal Point for coordination for the Associate Experts/JPO/APO Programmes. He organizes the biennial meeting with all UN Agencies and Donors to enhance the way the Programmes are implemented. He is also the Inter-Agency Focal Point for Coordination for capacity building activities in the field of Fellowships and other training activities offered by the UN System to member state's candidates.
