The St. Olaf College Institute for Freedom and Community will host a lecture by academic and author Joanna Williams titled Academic Freedom in an Age of Conformity.

The lecture, which is part of the Institute for Freedom and Community's fall series on "Academic Freedom: Its Meaning and Limits," begins at 7 p.m. in Viking Theater in Buntrock Commons. It is free and open to the public, and will be streamed and archived online.

Williams has taught in United Kingdom schools and higher education for more than 20 years, and she is the education editor for the online magazine Spiked. She believes students and faculty alike suffer when the freedom of academic thought is silenced, and her work reflects on the changing ideas about the purpose of higher education, censorship, free speech, and the nature of knowledge.
