The Asian Conversations program offers an interdisciplinary study of East Asia. Students study Chinese or Japanese language while exploring the cultures of East Asia in foundational liberal arts courses. Asian Conversations consists of language study and a sequence of four courses: "The Family and Self in East Asia," "East Asia and the West," "Rice and Society in East Asia," and "National Identity in China and Japan." The first three courses are taken on-campus during the first or second year at St. Olaf-- one course per semester. The fourth course is actually taken in China and Japan during the January Interim of the sophomore year. All the courses fulfill general education requirements that are needed for graduation, including the required First Year Writing Course.

Students interested in the Asian Conversations program should contact the Admissions Office or the director of Asian Conversations to apply for admission into the program.

For more information, see the listing under Asian Studies.
