344 Music of the 20th and 21st Centuries

Intensive study of musical masterworks from ca.1890 to the present, focusing on formal and stylistic trends as well as the political, philosophical and economic contexts of Western art and popular music from French impressionism through American hip hop. Course work includes bibliographic instruction, lecture/discussion, and an analytic research paper. Prerequisites: Music 241, 242. Offered fall semester 2012-13 and alternate years.
