The central Celtic cross on the stone, chiseled
between the numerals 18 and 77, perfectly captured the founders'
intentions. By mistake, the stone was placed on the northwest corner
of the building, rather than on the southeast corner: the eastern
side of the building, facing Northfield, was the intended front
façade. The builders could not have known that the future development
of the campus would correct the mistake.
