Academic Computing Policy Board

Minutes for February 13, 2007 ACPB Meeting

The meeting was convened at 1:30 in the IIT workroom.

Members present: Gary Miessler (chair), Phyllis Larson, Roberta Lembke, and Anthony Becker.

  1. Roberta reported on the status of computer requests that had been approved at the November 21, 2006 meeting. All faculty laptops have been delivered, and to date there have been no issues with them. The situation with recyclable PCs is very tight, and adjunct faculty must make do with what is available. The purchase of equipment for faculty offices and labs is on target with budget.
  2. Roberta also brought the committee up to date on student-related computer matters. Campus wireless has now been expanded to all major buildings with the exception of the administration building. Coverage in some dorms is spotty, and placing some access points in student rooms may be necessary. Student use of Macs is increasing. Approximately 70% of students now bring laptops to campus. Nevertheless, about 86% still use public labs.
  3. The college has purchased the digital asset management package CONTENTdm. This package, which is designed for managing images, video and audio files, and other digital media, is likely to receive broad use across campus. Assistance with implementing its use will need to be provided for departments and administative offices.
  4. Another recent purchase has been ImageNow, a document managing system that will capture electronic copies of invoices, checks, and other documents. This system will be used extensively, especially by adminstrative offices.
  5. The committee discussed briefly space-related needs of IIT, including the location of IIT itself (related to planning for future uses of the current Science Center), the location of the Helpdesk, and the need to provide expanded services in the library. The board also discussed converting the library den into a computer lab/classroom.
  6. The committee brainstormed possible sessions that could be taught during the summer institute. Ideas included providing workshops on podcasting, advanced Moodle, and other technologies. One suggestion was to bring a national educator to campus to make presentations on online-related topics, for example social computing.

The next meeting was scheduled for February 27, 2007, at 1:30 in the IIT workroom.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:30.

Respectfully submitted,
Gary Miessler
