Dance 215: Power Play (0.25)
Catalog Description
Play is powerful in learning. It is engaging, energizing, and enlightening. This class explores a range of physical activities including Big Ball Work, tumbling, outdoor contouring and terraining, Contact Improvisation, and Capoeira, all in the spirit of play. Each activity develops physical skill, physical confidence, and physical intelligence by developing body organization, strength, and alignment. Investigation into the nature of play as creative process provides a theoretical foundation. Prerequisites: Dance 105, 110, or 111.
Rationale:
This new intermediate-level movement technique class will add more breadth and depth to the existing intermediate-level technique options for students in dance. It focuses attention on sets of skills that dancers are encountering randomly, but which existing classes do not cover in any depth. In addition, it adds a significant focus on the creative process of play and exploration as foundations of movement technique, an area which is touched on piecemeal in some classes but not dealt with in any depth.
This class will replace one (0.25) section of Modern Dance II (Technique Course). Three sections of Modern Dance II will still be offered each year. Because in this case, class size will not be constrained by studio size, the proposed course may be able to accommodate more students than the course it replaces.
