Curriculum and Educational Policies Committee
(Attachment II to CEPC Minutes of 4/5/06)
Existing guidelines limit the number of lecture sections scheduled by any department to 11% of the department's total lecture sections for the following time periods:
- 9:05 MWF
- 10:45 MWF
- 9:35 TTh
Departments are also required to schedule at least 11% of their total lecture sections at 8:00 (can be combined MWF/TTh sections).
Currently, departments are permitted to round up to the next whole number for 9:05 MWF, 10:45 MWF, and 9:35 TTh, and to round down for 8:00 classes. Thus, departments offering as few as ten courses a semester can offer two courses during each of the highly scheduled time periods. This results in a tight classroom situation that does not allow for much movement when enrollments are higher or lower than expected, and creates problems in finding seating configurations and technology that faculty request.
Recommendation: Modify the scheduling guidelines so that the number of lecture and discussion sections scheduled by a department equal no more than 10% per time period. (There are 10 standard time periods in our course schedule.) Any additional courses must be scheduled to avoid the following time periods (these are the most heavily scheduled currently):
- 9:05 MWF
- 10:45 MWF
- 11:50 MWF
- 9:35 TTh
- 11:45 TTh
Recommendation: The Registrar's Office requests that CEPC grant authority to the Registrar to enforce these guidelines, and to use her/his discretion in extending the 10% limit to additional time periods when necessary.
Recommendation: The Registrar's Office requests that CEPC establish a guideline that would result in departments spreading their courses more evenly through the day during Interim and also for Summer School.
