CEPC Minutes 11/1/2006

Members present: Dietz (chair). Ananda-Owens, Beld, Carullo, Cisar, Lind, Lovett, McClure

  1. Call to order. Chair Dietz called the meeting to order at 3:19

  2. Consider of the Family Studies proposal

    - Representatives (Steve Soderlind, Mary Carlsen, Sharon Powell, and Chuck Huff) from Family Studies and from Social Work made opening comments regarding their proposal currently before CEPC. Background information was provided to give CEPC an idea of the processes involved leading up to this proposal. They currently have two tenured faculty between the departments and would like to pursue another tenure line in the family studies field. There are currently five Family Studies courses, all taught by the same person. Ideally the proposed configuration would include two new faculty with the background and flexibility to teach across the scope of these disciplines. Conversation continued about the viability of continuing the major, if a concentration was an option (particularly considering the proposal is for a 12 course concentration). Flexibility on course sequencing, the number of courses within the concentration, what to do with the major, and staffing were topics discussed. Questions and concerns were raised and addressed. It was determined that CEPC needed to further discuss the proposal and options that were raised during the presentation and discussion.

    - CEPC discussion on proposal presentation.

  3. Approval of the minutes from 10/25/06 were approved with one modification.

  4. Announcements

    - Chair Dietz discussed proposals that will be brought to us in the near future.

  5. Consideration of .25 credit course in majors and concentrations

    - ARMS faculty would like to adjust their curriculum by adding a .25 credit to the major for their senior capstone writing project. Discussion followed. Chair Dietz will communicate suggestions and concerns from CEPC to the ARMS faculty for their consideration.

  6. Other business: no other business.

  7. Adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 4:43.
