American Conversations Program

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will demonstrate:

  1. interdisciplinary understanding of key topics of American history and culture by studying the complex interrelationships between historical trends, literary and artistic movements, and evolving cultural practices.
  2. broad understanding both the founding American principles of freedom, equality, and human rights, as well as the ongoing struggle of individuals and groups to gain full access to such rights and freedoms over the course of the history of the United States.
  3. understanding of the way in which the meanings of history are themselves historical – i.e. that the significance of historical figures, events and ideas evolve over time, reflecting an ongoing dialogue between “the past” and the ever-changing “present” from which the past is viewed.
