Faculty Life Committee

The Mellby Memorial Lectures

The Faculty Life Committee sponsors a lecture series in memory of Carl A. Mellby. A member of the faculty from 1901-1949, Mellby taught European history and introduced courses in economics, sociology, political science, and art history. In honoring Melby with a lecture series in his name, the College also honors his successors on the faculty who are chosen by the Faculty Life Committee to reflect on the significance of their scholarly work and developments in their academic fields. Mellby lecturers exemplify the liberal arts education to which St. Olaf College is committed: excellence marked by comprehensiveness, intellectural seriousness and creativity within the context of a concern for the interrelationships and communication.

The Faculty Life Committee chooses Mellby lecturers from nominations made by members of the faculty. Nominations are held and reviewed by the committee for two years; thus nominations for 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 Mellby lectures should be addressed to the Chair of the Faculty Development Committee. Deadline for receipt of nominations is noted on the Deadlines List.
