Minutes of the September 7, 2006 FDC Meeting
Present: all members
- Meeting time – set for Thursdays 8:00 a.m. for Semester I
- Brochure – Doug agreed to edit last year’s brochure
- FCD/CILA lunch re: Released Time Grant applicants
a. Will be September 21 st
b. Speakers will be Mary Trull and Kathy Tegtmeyer-Pak
c. Jeanine will attend and any other FDC members are also welcome
- FDC Workshop for Released Time applicants
a. Applications due October 27, 2006
b. First workshop will be October 2 nd 12:00-1:00 run by Tony and Doug
c. Second workshop will be October 3 rd 3:15-4:15 run by Jeanine and Tim
d. Jeanine will advertise and reserve rooms
e. The workshop model will be to review criteria, discuss common pitfalls, and consider how a FDC proposal can work in tandem with external proposals
f. Committee will consider developing FAQ document for FDC website
g. Committee will discuss pitfalls at September 28 th meeting
- Fall Melby lecture
a. October 19 th
b. Tim will plan and contact Rich DuRocher with timeline for producing materials
- FDC Workshop for Summer applicants
a. Applications due February 23, 2007
b. Workshop will be January 10, 2007
- Spring Melby lecture
a. March 8, 2007
b. Irina will plan (with help from Tim)
c. Revise Melby criteria – Committee will discuss at September 28 th meeting
- DC meetings with individuals departments
a. Will continue, over entire year (not just Sem I)
b. General process: send summation of faculty development opportunities before meeting with departments and then ask for feedback at the meeting about how FDC is or is not meeting faculty development needs
c. Jeanine will send summation/broad explanation of FDC programs and information on Kris MacPherson’s meeting with IGS faculty last year
- Feedback for Released Time and Summer applicants
a. Now 1-2 sentences in a letter
b. Applicants could meet with FDC member from applicant’s Faculty and GFR Director for more extensive feedback
c. Committee will discuss at next meeting
- Research groups
a. These informal gatherings would encourage faculty to seek out others with common research interests
b. David will send literature on ‘faculty learning communities’
- Visit from Jeanne Narum (ICO, PKAL)
a. Narum will be on campus October 23 rd-24 th
b. One idea for her visit is to have her meet with all parties interested/involved with faculty development at St. Olaf
c. Will discuss at next meeting
