Faculty Development Committee
Minutes of 10 September 2004
Present: Paddy Dale, Shelly Dickinson, Jeanine Grenberg, Marty Hodel, Kris MacPherson, Arnie Ostebee, David Schodt, and Bill Thornton.
A. The minutes of the September 2 meeting were edited and corrected.
B. Charles Wilson inquired about our committee's help and input with NEH Summer Stipends. Specifically he has asked to attend one of our meetings asking for assistance with guidelines for selecting recipients.
Kris MacPherson, Committee Chair, will ask Charles to attend the September 24 meeting.
C. Jeanine Grenberg circulated copies and spoke about the FDC brochure. She suggested an additional sentence be added to the "Summer Grants for Scholarly & Artistic Activity" portion of the brochure. It was noted that there is some confusion about the status of stipends as part of summer grants, and it was agreed there should be further discussion of this.
D. Jeanine suggested October 4 and/or 5, as two possible dates for the Writing of Released Time Grants. The workshop will be announced at a later meeting after it is determined when the presenters are available to share their experiences.
E. Additional editorial changes were made in the brochure, which included "typos" and spelling and spacing.
F. Shelly Dickinson asked questions regarding her work with arrangements and promotional materials for the Fall 2004 Mellby Lecture. There continues to be a great deal of confusion about which office on campus is to make the brochures and posters.
G. Paddy Dale announced there is a new "commercial" source of outside assistance. It is called "IRIS" and St. Olaf will be receiving a three-month free subscription on a trial basis. St. Olaf will probably subscribe to the source after the three-month trial.
Paddy did ask us as a committee to share his excitement about the source and share the information as well as encouraging as many as possible to use the source.
H. The committee also decided to add a discussion of Summer stipends to the agenda for the September 24 meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Bill Thornton, Recorder
