General Education Committee

Minutes of the February 22, 2006 Meeting

GEC members present : Karl Fink (chair, HUM), Kathy Shea (NSM), Sherry Saterstrom (FA), Chris Chiappari (IGS), Erica Jaasted (appointed student), Ishanaa Rambachan (elected student), Solveig Zempel (Associate Dean, IGS), ex-officio, Kathy Granquist (Registrar’s representative), ex-officio.

The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m.

The minutes from the February 15, 2006 joint meeting with CEPC were approved.

Most of the meeting was a discussion of how GEC will review courses with the new GE attributes. Chris volunteered to send out the Web link to the new SPM requirement. We decided all chairs would receive the same letter from GEC, sent by Karl as Chair of GEC, explaining the process.

Implementation will be for Fall 2007. GEC will start recertifying courses this spring. The Registrar’s office will send a list of courses with the current GE attribute to chairs and departments will be asked to return a list of courses that need to be certified for the new attribute. Departments will also respond with an explanation of how courses meet the new GE attributes. Courses that meet the requirement in a similar way can be presented as a group. Expected learning outcomes should be included in the rationale. A syllabus should also be included for each course.

We will ask that courses to be recertified for SPM (formerly PHA) be submitted to the Registrar’s Office by April 3, courses to be recertified for BTS-T by April 12, and courses to be recertified for AQR (formerly MAR) by April 26.

Karl will send a draft of the letter to the committee for review and then to each department the first week of March.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at 3:30 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Shea, Secretary pro tempore
