General Education Committee

Minutes of the 4/5/06 GEC meeting

GEC members present: Karl Fink (chair, HUM), Kathy Shea (NSM), Sherry Saterstrom (FA), Chris Chiappari (IGS), Erica Jaasted (appointed student), Solveig Zempel (Associate Dean, IGS), ex-officio, Kathy Granquist (Registrar’s representative), ex-officio.

Visitors: Paul Zorn (Chair, Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science), Kay Smith (Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science), and Cindy Book (Chair, Physical Education)

The meeting was called to order at 3:35 p.m.

Minutes from the 3/22/06 meeting were approved, with revisions.

Karl Fink noted the email he received about a meeting of the Curriculum Coordinating Committee (CCC) on April 20 to discuss a possible new committee structure.

The Re-certification Proposal for BTS-B (Submission by DeAne Lagerquist, Chair, Religion) was considered and approved by the Committee. At this point, only guidelines are required in the re-certification proposal; outcomes may be included as well, at the discretion of the departments submitting the proposal.

In terms of recording the committee’s actions regarding re-certification of an attribute, Kathy Granquist said that it simply needed to be documented in our minutes, e.g., GEC approved re-certification of Religion 121 for BTS-B on April 5, 2006.

The rest of the meeting consisted of an open discussion of the re-certification of the new GE attributes of Studies in Physical Movement (SPM) and Abstract and Quantitative Reasoning (AQR). After much discussion, it was decided that the deadline for submitting re-certification proposals for SPM and AQR would be left open for now: Cindy Book and Sherry Saterstrom for SPM, and Paul Zorn and Kay Smith for AQR, may turn in a proposal before the end of the semester.

And it was decided to not set any dates for departments to turn in their re-certification proposals at this time.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 3.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:40 pm

Respectfully submitted,
Chris Chiappari, Secretary pro tempore
