Minutes of the May 3, 2006 GEC Meeting

GEC members present : Karl Fink (chair, HUM), Kathy Shea (NSM), Sherry Saterstrom (FA), Erica Jaasted (appointed student), Ishanaa Rambachan (elected student), Solveig Zempel (Associate Dean, IGS), ex-officio, Kathy Granquist (Registrar’s representative), ex-officio.

Visitor: Elizabeth Leer (SSF representative starting next fall)

The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m.

Minutes from the 04/05/06 meeting were approved with revisions to the Curriculum Coordinating statement. The Curriculum Coordinating Committee will meet monthly starting September 14, 2006.

The Committee considered the following course proposals and took the indicated action:

History - Term in Asia 255: The United States and East Asia in Historical Perspective Action: approved for HWC and MCS-D

Biology 387: Neuroethology
Action: approved for ORC

Physics 154: The Origins of Nuclear Weapons
Action: approved for NST

The Committee approved the re-certification proposal for SPM from Dance as submitted by Sherry Saterstrom. Sherry presented an overview statement explaining in general how all the courses presented satisfied the guidelines. She also included course descriptions from the catalogue. We will recommend her presentation as a good model for re-certification proposals from other departments.

We next expect re-certification proposals from Physical Education and Mathematics.

The committee’s priority for next year will be to re-certify courses for which General Education requirements have changed. The revised GE curriculum will go into effect in Fall 2007. All GE courses need to be recertified, but if requirements have not changed re-certification will go quickly.

Our appointed student member of the committee for next fall will be Maren Anderson.

The next meeting will be either in May or next fall.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Shea, Secretary pro tempore
