General Education Committee

Minutes of the Wednesday, September 13, 2006 GEC Meeting

Present: Sherry Saterstrom (Chair, Fine Arts), Anne Sabo (IGS), Maren Anderson (Student), Elizabeth Leer (Social and Applied Science), Kathy Shea (Natural Sciences and Mathematics), Kathy Granquist (Registrar, ex-officio), Karl Fink (Humanities).

The first item of business was to set the schedule for regular meetings, which will change from 2:00-3:00 Wednesdays to 2:30-3:30, with ad hoc meetings to be scheduled as the need arises.

Secondly, Kathy Granquist distributed three documents to coordinate the work of the committee:

  1. an updated version of the GE “Guidelines for Course Proposals” as presently posted on the web;
  2. proposed revisions to the “Guidelines” passed by the faculty; and
  3. the “Final Report” from the GE Task Force mandating the re-certification of GE credits offered across the curriculum.

Thirdly, there was extensive discussion on the re-certification process begun last Spring Term, 2006; for BTST-B and SPM credit. Plans are to begin this fall with AQR re-certification statements begun last spring and to solicit statements from departments that offer ALS-A credit by mid-October and for ALS-L by the end of October.

The meeting adjourned at 3:15 and the next meeting was set for 2:30, September 27, in BC220.

Respectfully submitted,
Karl J. Fink
