The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m.

Minutes from the May 10 and September 13 meetings were approved as corrected.

Sherry reported on a meeting of the Faculty Coordinating Committee. Each committee was asked to review its charge as stated in the Faculty Manual. GEC’s main function in recent years has been to review courses for General Education credit. The original charge to the committee was also to consider policy. However, the recent review of the General Education curriculum was by a task force appointed by the President rather than the GEC committee, in part because the committee felt it needed to focus on reviewing time sensitive course proposals rather than overall requirements.

This year the committee has the task of reviewing and re-certifying all courses that satisfy GE requirements with a priority on courses for which GE requirements have changed. The plan is for the revised GE requirements to be in place by fall ’07. Sherry is in contact with chairs of departments and asking them to prepare summaries of how courses in their departments satisfy GE requirements. Plans this fall are to first review ALS-A and ALS-L and AQR courses.

The Committee considered the following course proposals and took the indicated action:

Center for Integrative Studies 214 Seminar: The Art and Politics of the Book
Action: approved for ALS-A

Media Studies 270 Film Genres
Action: approved for ALS-A

Music 236 Theatrical Music
Action: approved for ALS-A

Norwegian 240 Vikings in Literature
Action: approved for ALS-A and ORC

The next meeting will be Oct. 4.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:35 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Shea, Secretary pro tempore
