Other Opportunities

Educational Talent Search (ETS) and GEAR UP (GU) are looking for St. Olaf students to be mentors and tutors. ETS and GU are college preparatory programs that work with students in grades 6th-12th at Minneapolis Washburn, North and Northeast and St. Paul Harding, Humboldt Senior and Junior High.

The mentoring program is coordinated through the students' English class and it is designed to help students improve their writing skills as well as learn about college from their St. Olaf mentor. As a mentor, you will be paired with 1 or 2 students from the same school and correspond by writing letters on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The average time commitment for the mentoring program is about 1 hour during the weekend as you receive letters on Friday and they are due back in ETS and GU PO Box by Sunday evening.  Also there are three field trips that allow you to meet your mentee in person.

Tutoring occurs at Minneapolis and St. Paul schools during the regular school day and after school.  A 4 hour block of time is required because it takes 1 hour of travel each way and 2 hours of tutoring at the school. You need to be a sophomore, junior, or senior in order to tutor. This is a paid position. If you are interested, please contact the Administrative Assistant Denice Stocker at stocker@stolaf.edu or call extension X3218.
