Other Opportunities
Educational Talent Search (ETS) and GEAR-UP (GU) are looking for St.Olaf students to be mentors and tutors. ETS and GU are college preparatory programs that work with students in grades 6th-12th at Minneapolis Washburn, North and Northeast and St.Paul Humboldt Senor and Junior High. The mentoring program is coordinated through students' English classes and helps students improve their writing skills as well as learn about college from their St. Olaf College mentor. Mentors are paired with 2 students from the same school and correspond weekly by writing letters. The average time commitment for the mentoring program is about 1 hour during the weekend as you receive letters on Friday and they are due back in ETS and GU PO Box by Monday at 1 P.M. and the three times that you meet with your mentee. Tutoring occurs at schools in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Tutoring takes place during the regular school day and after school. You will need a 4 hour block of time between 7a.m. and 5p.m. Tuesday-Friday. A 4 hour block of time is required because it takes 1 hour of travel each way and 2 hours of tutoring at school. You need to have your own transportation and be a sophomore, junior, or senior this year. This is a paid position if you have a student work. If you are interested, please contact the Program assistant Carrie Swift at swiftc@stolaf.edu or call extension X3783.
