Here on the St. Olaf campus, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and allied (GLBTQA) staff and faculty are engaged in charting a course for a more positive future. We are in the process of establishing an umbrella organization designed to embrace all people who uphold the worth of GLBTQA Oles. The umbrella organization, as yet unnamed, will bring together faculty, staff, parents, students and alumni to create a St. Olaf community alliance for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and allies concerns. For now, SOLGEN is serving the community by calling together all who care for and about GLBTQA persons in the St. Olaf community, past, present and future, to participate in dialogue, planning, and action.
The participation of alumni in this effort is vital. Whether you are gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgender or queer, or heterosexual, it is important for each of us who believes in fairness and equality to stand together as allies to one another. On the Allies page of this website, you will see the 110 faculty and staff who are standing together to lift up the visibility and dignity of GLBTQA people in the St. Olaf Community as it is most broadly defined. We invite you to add your name to this community allies list and to work together with other alumni to support the St. Olaf community alliance.
FOUR EASY WAYS YOU CAN HELP:
1. Add your name to the St. Olaf community allies list today by e-mailing your name, class year, and major/s and if you'd like, your current job title, to solgen-info@stolaf.edu. Then, consider updating your contact info in the St. Olaf Alumni directory at https://fusion.stolaf.edu/alumni/. That way, when we have news to share, we will be able to reach you.
2. Forward the Allies List link http://www.stolaf.edu/community/solgen/allies/index.html ,to all of your fair-minded friends, family, classmates, etc, and ask them to sign on as Allies. Working through personal networks is the most effective way to grow the Allies list. There is strength in numbers. Will you take the time now to help, by e-mailing 2, 3, 10, or even 20 people you know who would be willing to stand together to lift up the visibility and dignity of GLBTQA people who have been or are now members of the St. Olaf community?
3. Join a new alumni listserv by writing to solgen-info@stolaf.edu. The listserv is to share ideas about how to help GLBTQA Alums to feel more connected to each other and to the St. Olaf Community. It is an open forum for suggestions, organizing, sharing stories, and looking to the future.
4. Attend an alumni event on the St. Olaf campus:
a. Saturday, October 1, 2005. Reception for the St. Olaf GLBTQA community on Homecoming Weekend
b. GLBTQA people of faith Educational Seminar cosponsored by several classes: Homecoming 2006
c. Check http://www.stolaf.edu/community/solgen/calendar for additional events.
AND LASTLY,
We need your leadership . Help us reach out effectively through the website and the listserv. Share your vision, your time, your resources, what ever you have to give towards a positive future for GLBTQA people in the St. Olaf community, past, present and future. Get in touch with other fair-minded alumni via the listserv with your ideas.
This is a difficult time in our nation. Now, more than ever, we who identify as GLBTQA need sources of hope and inspiration. We need to know that we belong. So many people are willing to stand with us, as we stand together for the truth of our own lives, and for the future of young adults just now finding ways to believe in themselves. Help build a St. Olaf Community GLBTQA Alliance. Let's start today.
