Undergraduate Scholars Program

The Undergraduate Scholars Program (USP) is one of the College's most recent initiatives aimed at building an inclusive community. Part of the current Strategic Plan, this initiative identifies and encourages students to consider a teaching career in higher education and assists them to prepare for admission into competitive graduate programs. Services and activities of the Program contribute to participants developing undergraduate records that will make them strong competitors for assistantships and fellowships in graduate school. A broad range of services will be provided and activities organized to address the needs and interests of students at the various stages in their academic careers. The program is offered to all students interested in exploring the possibility of a higher education teaching career. Concentrated efforts are made to engage first generation students and students from underrepresented communities. Students are assigned a St. Olaf College faculty mentor for their junior and senior year and the first three years of their graduate education.

The first event took place on Saturday, November 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This consisted of a panel of five young scholars pursuing graduate school, four St. Olaf graduates and one a Princeton University graduate. There are a wide variety of events planned for the remainder of the academic year.
