Exploding the Box
Making it in the Arts is a one-day conference that provides a forum for cross-disciplinary discussions on issues facing all artists whether performing, visual or literary. This day-long event brings nationally-recognized arts professionals (many of whom are St. Olaf alumni) to discuss pertinent topics and issues surrounding innovation in the arts. Panel topics include how to start an arts organization, arts marketing and management, as well as afternoon question and answer sessions with speakers.
Keynote
The keynote speaker Kurt’s Gough ’88 career began in Twin Cities theater after graduating from Olaf in the late ’80s, then teaching theater design at Luther College in 1989-90, and on to five years managing the Prop Department at Center Stage in Baltimore, MD.
He was inspired to study architecture, and moved back to Minnesota to attend the University of Minnesota. During his first job interview with an architecture firm, he was asked why he made such a dramatic change. The question stumped him. Drawing, painting, sculpting, scenery, building: it is always about design and materials. The process of design is one of the most powerful tools we can harness. In 2004 Kurt and two partners founded Shelter Architecture to put this belief into practice.
“Young people from all fields need to understand something about entrepreneurship; it’s not a topic that’s taught in the classroom. Developing something comes with risk,”
-Philip Brunelle
