Course Description

This class deals with the biological basis of behavior. In the first four weeks, we will cover the basic structure of the neuron and the nervous system, as well as the processes of neuronal communication. With an understanding of these basics, we will then study the biological mechanisms of sensory impressions, movement, sleep, homeostasis, emotions and learning. We will hold a class vote to decide on one more topic to be covered in the course. The choices are: reproductive behavior (Ch.11), language (Ch.14) or alcoholism, mood disorders and schizophrenia (Ch.15)

Reading

- required: Biological Psychology, JW Kalat, 7th ed

- supplemental/ recommended: materials posted on course website

(website: http://www.stolaf.edu/courses/current/Psychology/238/)

Chapter outlines are posted on the website. Sometimes study questions are added to the outline. All readings should be done prior to class. Lectures will focus on select topics in the book and will also include information not covered in the book. You are responsible for all information covered in class and the assigned reading.

Practice tests will be available on the website and/ or will be sent by email. The final exam will be cumulative, and will include material from the student presentations.

Group Project

The project (to be done in groups of 3 or 4) consists in a 15 minute presentation and a 10-15 page paper on any topic in Biopsychology that interests you. It can be a literature research project or a small experiment or study.

I am fully aware of the difficulties often arising from group projects. Chuck Huff has some excellent guidelines for group work posted on his website. Please refer to it before starting work with your group: http://www.stolaf.edu/people/huff/classes/Intro/Groupguide.html#Advice

Our TA Eleni Pinnow is also an excellent resource person who is available to help you with any questions. She will have a folder in the Psych Office in which you should leave all assignments.

General guidelines for paper

Suggested Timeline

By week 2: Peruse book and website to define a broad topic of interest.

By week 3: Decide on a focussed topic and find a group. You can send an email to the class alias announcing which topic you are interested in. Have students interested in the same/ similar topic contact you to form a group of 3 or 4

By week 5: Decide on subtopics each of you will be researching individually. Find original papers on your subtopic. Topic due Oct 4. (Topics can be submitted by email.)

By week 8: Read and summarize your papers. As a group write the outline. Outline due Oct 25.

By week 10: Write a first draft for your part of the paper. Prepare your presentation slides.

By week 11: Have group members read your draft and review your slides and give you feedback. As a group, pay attention to relating the subtopics to each other and to the transitions between them.

By week 12: Edit your slides and draft according to your group’s feedback. As a group, practice your presentation.

Week 14/15: Presentations. Finalize your draft incorporating feedback on presentations.

Academic Honesty

When writing papers, annotated bibliographies, or posters for psychology classes, one follows the same citation rules covered in English classes. Namely, you must properly cite all your sources, indicate direct quotes, and otherwise follow the St. Olaf Student Handbook regarding plagiarism. You are responsible for knowing and understanding the plagiarism policies of the college, which are available in the St. Olaf Student Handbook and on-line (http://www.stolaf.edu/stnlife/thebook/student/academic/plagiarism.html). Thus you cannot plead ignorance if your assignments contain plagiarized material and such assignments will receive an automatic zero.
