Elementary Spanish 112

Elementary Spanish 112  (Beginning Spanish II) concentrates on further development of the four basic skills necessary in the acquisition of a second language: listening, comprehension, reading, speaking and writing, in an information-based context and with a communicative approach.  These skills are developed in meaningful cultural contexts.   To provide for the development of communicative proficiency, Spanish 112  and the text ¡Tú dirás!: Introducción a la lengua y cultura hispánicas  have incorporated insights from task-based instruction--small and large group activities which allow for some type of information to be exchanged and acted upon among students or among students and instructor.  In a more traditional sense, Spanish 112  also includes work grammar and an audio program for correct production.

There are two primary goals for this course: (1) help students become functionally proficient in the Spanish language by developing the four skills--started in Spanish 111;  (2) continue with an increased awareness of those cultures where Spanish is spoken, process that was already begun in Spanish 111.

This semester we will (try to) cover “Capítulo 6” to “Capítulo 12” in the text and in the Activities Manual..

The final grade will be distributed as follows:

            Participación y preparación............................   25 %

            Pruebas..................................................          30%

            Tareas....................................................          10%

            Oral Exam................................................        10%

            Final Exam...............................................        25%

Grade Scale:

General Information

¿Qué es ‘Participación y preparación’?:

‘Participación y preparación’ means that class time will be devoted to practice in speaking (through small group and large group activities) and to answer questions arising from difficult and ambiguous points in the text or student manual.  You must come prepared--have studied (not just read) the assignment for every day class--to participate in class, in Spanish, at all times.  If you have questions that are not answered in class, please see your professor during office hours or make an appointment to see her.  The syllabus indicates the date each asssignment is due.  You are responsible for knowing the material regardless of whether or not it was practiced in class.

Class attendance is mandatory.  Each unexcused absence in excess of three (3) per semester will automatically lower your class participation and preparation grade by  5%.  If you miss a class, you are still responsible for all class work assignments, etc.  When you miss a class, you must contact a classmate of yours as soon as possible to find out about the material covered during your absence.

Because a very important goal of the course is the development of listening and speaking skills, 25% of the grade will be based on your achievement on these areas (class participation).  It is to your advantage to listen to the lab tapes, practice with cards, interviews, small-group work in class, attend all class sessions as well as the Spanish Table sessions and/or Spanish House cultural activities.

¿Qué es ‘Pruebas’?

‘Pruebas’ means that there will be an exam per lesson of ¡Tú dirás!   These exams will cover mostly the material in the lesson.  However, because each chapter builds up on previous ones, the exam will also indirectly test material from previous lessons.  There will be 5 exams (PRUEBAS ) during the semester.  Only 4 will count towards your final grade.  This gives you the option of dropping the exam with the lowest grade, or, if you miss one exam, that will be the one that you may drop.  The last lesson studied will be tested within the final exam.

Attendance & Absences: The dates of each ‘prueba’ appear on your syllabus. Absence from ‘pruebas’ will be excused only if the student provides written proof of a sound reason for his/her absence (medical certificate or another document).  Make-up tests: Professors are not required to give make-up tests.  If you know in advance that you will miss one ‘prueba’--due to a College commitment or a family emergency--you must notify your professor as soon as possible and make appropriate alternative arrangements.  *Any arrangement is at the discretion of your professor.

¿Qué es ‘Tareas’?

‘Tareas’ means that you should expect to have 2-3 hours of homework for each hour spent in class. You should complete every “Etapa” in your Manual  soon after the full “Etapa” has been introduced and practiced in class.  The Manual  is well integrated with the text’s lexical and structural syllabus.  Each “Etapa” in your workbook corresponds to each textbook “Etapa” and relates to the topic in focus in each of the chapters of the textbook.  An “Answer Key to Activities Manual should be bundled with your Activities Manual.   Assignments must be ready to be handed in during the following class period (& not later).

¿Qué es ‘Laboratorio de Lengua’?

‘Laboratorio de Lengua’--The language tapes at the Language Lab (accompanying your Manual) give you the opportunity to listen and practice Spanish outside of the classroom environment.  Also, you need to listen to this material to complete some of the exercises from your Manual.  Therefore, you should plan to attend the language lab regularly.  Classroom activities and tests are based on the fact that you are getting the speaking and listening practice provided by the tapes (textbook & Manual ) that accompany each lesson of your textbook.

[*Please, be aware that either for your listening practice (lab tape) or for your    textbook-video practice (¡Tú dirás!  video), the recorded material has been organized for you in such a way that you will find one chapter per tape (cassette or             video).  Also, keep in mind that besides your textbook, you must have your       Activities Manual  and your dictionary with you when you attend lab sessions.]

i)- ¡Tú dirás!  video: You must also attend the Language Lab to watch the video-material for the corresponding “Etapa,” for each chapter  of ¡Tú dirás!.  This video-material is only available at the Language Lab.

ii)- Destinos  video: Besides the video corresponding to the textbook ¡Tú dirás!, students must also watch Destinos  (11 chapters), a video-program only available from the Language Lab.  Students are expected to watch one or two chapters of Destinos  every other week, as part of the requirement for Spanish 112.  Please, follow your Destinos  video assignment of your syllabus.

iii)- CD-Rom: ¡Tú dirás!  also includes a CD-Rom that accompanies the reading material for each chapter.  It provides listening, reading & writing practice.

¿Qué es ‘Examen oral’?

‘Examen oral’ means that there will be an oral exam after Spring Break (Sat., March 22-Sun.-March 30).  You will need a partner for it who must be chosen on your own and by yourself (the partner will not be assigned to you by your professor).  The exam will be given by appointment and will take place in the professor’s office (Old Main 22 D).

*If you are unable to keep the appointment, it is your responsibility to reschedule the interview by working it out with your partner or with another classmate, and then, inform your instructor immediately.

¿Qué es ‘Examen final’?

‘Examen final’ means that the final exam for Spanish 112  is the exam for all students enrolled in this particular class.  The exact date and time of the final exam is announced in the St. Olaf Class and Lab Schedule.  The final exam will be in the classroom where your Spanish classes have been held.

¿A qué hora puedo ver a mi profesora?

Horas de oficina--Any student is welcome to consult the professor in case of doubts, questions or difficulties related to class material during office hours or during mutually convenient times.  Office hours will be announced in class.

                                               DESTINOS

For each episode of Destinos  you must complete the exercises in your handout, in Spanish, on the content of each chapter.  To do this effectively, you must watch each chapter carefully, you may also want to write your own notes (in English or in Spanish) separately.  Using your own notes, you will be able to complete successfully the exercises on each of the chapters of Destinos.

General questions that help to understand each chapter and to write a summary of it:

·        ¿Qué ocurre en el capítulo? (What is happening in this chapter?)

·        ¿Quién/es participan en los eventos del capítulo? (Who are involved in the events?)

·        ¿Dónde ocurren los eventos? ¿Dónde están las personas? (Where do the events take place and where are the people?)

·        ¿Cuándo ocurren los eventos--en la mañana, en la tarde, en la noche? ¿Qué momento del año es--mes, estación (season), etc? (When do the events take place--in the morning, afternoon, evening?  What time of the year is it--month or season?)

List of titles of each Destinos  episode:

11: “La demora”                       18: “Estimada señora Suárez ...”

            12:  “Revelaciones”                   19:  “Por fin...”

13:  “La búsqueda”                   20:  “Relaciones estrechas”

14:  “En el extranjero”   21:  “El peaje”

            15:  “Culpable”             22:  “Recuerdos”
