Course Description and Objectives
This course is an introduction to photography as an artistic medium.

Technical topics:
-the camera apparatus and its functions
-black-and-white photographic film processing and printing
-photograph presentation methods
Formal and Conceptual topics:
-the framing and compositional apparatus of the camera
-photographic space and time

We will use slide presentations and other exposures to the history of photography to examine the aesthetics of photography and its roles in our culture. We will use critiques to develop critical ideas on photography, awareness of images, and ultimately our own personal vision.

Materials and Equipment
The department provides photo chemicals, developing tanks and reels, thermometers and graduated cylinders. You must have a good, working 35mm camera with manual settings or with the capability of over-riding the automatics settings.
You will be asked to pay a fee of $50 for the materials you will use such as film, negative sleeves and drymount tissue. There are other materials you will need that can be purchased from the art department.

The following supplies will be available from the lab assistant in the supply room (hours to be announced)
-25-sheet packages of photo paper
-mat board

-All lab fees will be collected on Thursday, June 5.

Evaluation
Assignments will be graded on technical quality as well as your creative/conceptual approaches to the particular assignment.

Technical Issues: Creative/Conceptual issues:
-quality of final prints -expansion of assignment boundaries
-resolution of technical problems -ownership of the assignment, i.e., expressing yourself from within those boundaries

A large part of your final grade will be determined by your attendance, participation, and meeting assignment deadlines. You are expected to present your work for group critiques and to participate in discussions.

Art Department Attendance Policy
Given that such a large portion of critical learning in art classes takes place in the actual classroom setting, the art faculty has decided to set a uniform attendance policy. It is as follows:

1) The department will not differentiate between excused or not excused absences. In other words all absences are treated the same.
2) For all art department courses, you will be allowed 3 absences. With the 4th absence, your course grade will drop one full grade level for each absence after 3.
3) For studio courses, an absence on a scheduled critique day will drop your grade one full level for the assignment being critiqued in addition to counting as an absence as described above.

Photo Lab
The lab will be open with a lab assistant present for many regular hours during this summer session. You will be expected to work several hours per week outside of class.
The lab will run smoothly if everyone takes responsibility for the work space. You are responsible to follow darkroom procedures and pick up after yourselves. Respect the Lab Assistant’Äôs hours. You must be ready to leave the lab by closing time. Lab Assistants will be available to answer questions but they are not expected to clean up after you.
