Risk Assessment of the Flu Vaccine – Should You Be Immunized?

Group 1

The author believed that people at high risk should the vaccination due to the shortage of vaccine this year.  Others should get alternate vaccine LAIV (nasal).

Only susceptible persons should receive flu vaccine (pregnant, elderly, under age 2).  Others should conserve vaccine by not taking it.

High risk of developing complications should receive first priority for being vaccinated with inactivated form.

 

Group 2

Colorado healthcare workers study indicates low success, but still recommended for at-risk cases.

CO study showed this years’ vaccine not very effective, but several factors were not considered.  It is still important to give vaccine to at-risk cases.  Prescription drugs also listed as alternatives to the vaccine.

Regardless of unfavorable study results towards the flu vaccine, it is still recommended to get the vaccine as the study conducted was somewhat faulty.

 

Group 3

Currently there is no vaccine against avian flu in humans, however getting vaccinated for human flu can prevent a deadly and highly contagious combination of the two viruses.

Author believes human flu vaccination is an important preventative measure to stop the bird flu from being capable of spreading between humans.

Everything should be done to prevent the two (human and avian flu) viruses from infecting the same host so they can’t swap genetic material.

 

Group 4

Flu can be fatal and even those who have been vaccinated can die, but it is less likely for those who have been vaccinated.

It is inconclusive as to whether the flu vaccine is effective or not due to a lack of information and reporting, however the authors seem to be in favor of getting the vaccine.

Even though the season wasn’t as severe an epidemic, people are still advised to get the vaccine.
