Clearly, most of your learning will not take place during
the three hours a week in class, but rather in the six to nine hours a week
spent outside of class. Learning vocabulary, practicing pronunciation,
listening and grammar exercises are best done in the help sessions, language
laboratory, and working either alone or in German study groups.
1. You are encouraged to attend a help session (Zusatzstunde) once a week. A German major will be available in the evenings for the entire semester in Old Main 35 to help German 111-students practice the exercises in our textbook. While non-attendance will not hurt your grade directly, regular attendance can improve your grade significantly.
2. Make regular use of the language lab (Sprachlabor) on the second floor of Flaten Hall. Before the day we start each chapter, listen to the tapes for the three short dialogues (Dialoge) at the beginning of that chapter. Listen to the dialogues until you can understand all of what the speakers are saying without looking at the book. It is also a good idea to practice reading the dialogues with a partner so that you can come to class prepared to read them aloud with good German pronunciation. Use the language lab as often as possible to develop good German pronunciation, a main focus of German 111. As with the help sessions, regular lab visits can improve your grade significantly.
3. Use your workbook / lab manual / video workbook regularly. Although the syllabus refers to these only once at the beginning of each chapter, you should work through the respective exercises as we progress through each chapter, repeating exercises at a later time until they have become easy for you. By completing the exercises and checking your answers using the answer key in the back of the manual, you can judge which areas you have already mastered and which ones you may need more help with, either in class or in the help sessions. If any given exercise seems easy for you, there is no need to complete all the sentences. If it seems especially hard for you let me know so that we can devote some class time to it. This is a good way to prepare for the chapter tests, which will regularly contain sentences from both the workbook and the lab manual.
4. Please e-mail me regularly with questions or feedback. Your job isn't to keep me from noticing where you are having trouble, but just the opposite: to keep me informed right away of any areas you need help with so that we can nip any problems in the bud.
5. Keep a running list of difficult areas for you. You may want to ask for help with these areas at the Zusatzstunden or even do extra exercises for me to check over. If you jot down anything said in class that you don't understand, then you can consult the book, a fellow student, your tutor, or me outside of class to clear up your questions.
6. Use flash cards or English-German lists to review vocabulary; it is also a good idea to review vocabulary from earlier chapters from time to time. Learning vocabulary and developing a good German pronunciation are the two most important tasks for beginning German.
7. You may want to write yourself and me a note (e-mail or an anonymous note in my PO is great) right after every test listing any areas you still found difficult.
8. Choose exercises from the book that you find difficult and write them out for me to look over. There are a few written assignments already on the syllabus, others will also be assigned on a day-to-day basis in class, and you may choose your own to write out and hand in for me to correct. Not everyone needs practice on the same exercises.
9. Try to do some German every day, even if it's just memorizing vocabulary or listening to the dialogues. As with applied music or athletics, regular daily practice is key. You will make the best use of your time if you study German at least 15 minutes a day every day and do not study German for more than one hour at a time.
10. Attendance in class and active participation in class activities will enhance your learning of German. As a rule, we will do activities that are not in the book. (Book exercises can be done in the help sessions.) If you haven’t done the homework or are unprepared for any given class, please tell me at the beginning of the period if you don't want me to call on you. You can also always say: "ich passe."
11. Bonusaktivität: You are required to participate in at least one co-curricular German activity, such as conversation table (Stammtisch), German unification breakfast, and events in German House. Singing in the German choir counts as two activities (i.e. the required activity plus one extra-credit point). To get credit for these activities, simply fill in a form with the name and date of the event that you participated in and hand it in by the last day of class.
12. If you have a documented disability that
will impact your work in this class, please contact me to discuss your
needs. Additionally, you will need to
register with Student Disability Services located in the Academic Support
Center in Room 1 of the Old Main Annex.
All such discussions will be confidential.
