Requirements
Successful completion of the course requires attendance, preparation and where indicated submission of assignments as indicated in the schedule, active participation in class sessions, completion of two examinations, and a summative essay.

Evaluation
Final grades will be based on the following distribution.

25%   attendance, preparation, and class participation
25%   mid-term examination
25%   summative essay
25%   final examination

Schedule
Note the following fixed dates.

October 19:      Mid-term examination
November 23:  Essay due in class
December 20:   Final examination

A schedule of topics and assignments appears on the website under Schedule.  The syllabus will remain fixed, but adjustments to the schedule may be expected as the term proceeds.

Summative Essay
I n an essay of not less than 2500 or more than 3000 words: 1) describe what you take to be the essential social, economic, cultural, and political characteristics of Scandinavia at present; 2) account for these characteristics as consequences of Scandinavia history  in the period since 1500, making mention of all three counties in each of the centuries under consideration; 3) discuss what you think the people of the United States might learn from the Scandinavian experience of 1500 to the present.
