The mystery that lies behind the karesansui at the Ryoanji temple is what makes this garden so rich in meaning. The significance of the garden is that we do not know what it is because we do not know much about its creation. The garden was believed to be created between the dates 1499 and 1507. This would have been shortly after the infamous Onin civil wars, surviving the second fire at the Ryoanji temple shortly after the wars ended.
