Thoughtfulness
Approach
this class with care and thoughtfulness. Your class work
and participation should demonstrate seriousness of purpose. All of
your papers and presentations should exhibit a coherent argument,
adequate textual support, appropriate grammar, and clear sentence
structure. I expect that you will interact with both the subject matter
and other members of this class thoughtfully as you work to form
your own well-considered and well-supported opinions.
Integrity
One of the great goals of education is to learn to conduct oneself
honorably in intellectual affairs. To this end, the faculty has passed
a policy on academic integrity. Please pay special attention to
policies involving fabrication, plagiarism, and multiple submission. If
you have any questions, please ask. It is your responsibility to know
and follow this policy. It is located here. In general, I expect that
work you turn in as your own really is your own and any authors or
resources that you use have been appropriately credited.
Engagement
Come to class ready to discuss readings and engage in
discussion. Since good discussions require a variety of voices, I
expect all participants to be present both physically and mentally.
Texting, checking email, or falling asleep are signs of disengagement
and disrespect. You insult those around you and cheat yourself. Come to
class on time and be ready to speculate, refine, qualify, and even
change your mind!
