St. Olaf WWW Server Standards

It is important that visitors to the St. Olaf CWIS be able to distinguish clearly between an official publication from an office or department and an unofficial publication from an individual member of the community. The standards included in this document are intended to make that distinction clear — as well as to promote a consistent, efficient, and attractive interface for those seeking information on St. Olaf WWW Servers.

St. Olaf WWW Servers have two types of pages, Official Pages and Personal Pages. Every page, both official and personal, on a St. Olaf WWW Server is required to have a registered Information Provider; all Information Providers must sign an Information Provider Agreement Form.

The following standards apply to Official Pages on St. Olaf WWW Servers:

Information Providers for Official Pages must place on their pages standardized college identifiers in the manner specified below.

Official Pages Header

Each Official Page will carry at its top a standard header that signals to users that they are visiting an Official Page of St. Olaf College.

Information about including the standard header is available in the Web Developers Toolkit.

Navigation Bar

Each Official Page will carry a standardized navigation bar (also known as a footer) at its end that includes a link that will return users to the St. Olaf Home Page.

Information about including the standard navigation bar is available in the Web Developers Toolkit.

Official Pages Information Provider Link

Every page must include a standardized "mail to" link to its Information Provider, who will be expected, among other things, to reply in a timely and responsible fashion to e-mail inquiries generated by their pages and to webmaster queries related to their pages.

Accuracy of Information Provided

Information Providers are responsible for making sure that the information they provide on Official Pages is as accurate and up-to-date as possible and for removing or revising inaccurate material.

Grammar and Spelling

As an institution of higher learning, St. Olaf requires that the text on its web pages be grammatically correct and free of spelling errors. Information Providers are strongly encouraged to have their pages reviewed by another party for typographical errors and similar problems. Acronyms should be used sparingly and never as a first reference.

The following standards apply to Personal Pages on St. Olaf WWW Servers:

Information Providers for Personal Pages must place on their pages standardized college identifiers (available in the St. Olaf WWW Server Graphics Library) in the manner specified below.

Personal Pages Header

Every Personal Page (including each Personal Home Page) must provide a standardized link at its top to the Personal Pages Disclaimer.

Personal Home Pages Footer

All Personal Page Information Providers are required to carry this written disclaimer (in full) at the end of their Home Page:

Personal Page:

The views and opinions expressed in this page are strictly those of its Information Provider. The contents of this page have not been reviewed or approved by St. Olaf College. Personal Page Information Providers assume responsibility and liability for the content of their documents. Please use the link below to address all comments and other feedback to the Information Provider of this page.

Personal Pages "Mail To" Link

Every Personal Page must include a standardized "mail to" link to its Information Provider, who will be expected, among other things, to reply in a timely and responsible fashion to e-mail inquiries generated by their pages and to webmaster queries related to their pages.
