Departmental Distinction Information

The following letter contains the guidelines for the ARMS Senior Project.

I am writing to remind you of the senior project required of all majors in the ARMS program (For a full description of the program's graduation requirements please consult the College Catolog: http://www.stolaf.edu/catalog/academicprogram/american-rac-multi-studies.html.)

The general guidelines for this project are as follows: All graduating ARMS majors must complete an intermediate length interdisciplinary research paper, or other comparable project, reflecting knowledge of more than one ARMS-related field. We have traditionally defined this as twelve (or more) pages of original text, plus citiations, or the artistic equivalent of such a paper. The project must be interdisciplinary, relating the material from two (or more) ARMS credit courses in different academic disciplines.

Senior projects are supervised by a faculty member active in the ARMS porgram, ideally one teaching an ARMS-related course in which the senior is currently enrolled. (It is possible, but not necessary, that the project might be produced in conjunction with work in this course.) This faculty member is responsible for supervising the project and certifying its satisfactory completion.

By November 1, senior ARMS majors must do the following:

  • Confer with faculty members to find a senior project supervisor;
  • Complete the form below and send it to the Director of ARMS.

If you have questions about finding a project supervisor or creating an appropriate project, please feel free to contact me. My office phone is 3126, and office hours are in HOlland 532 on Mondays 1-3; Tuesday 11:30-12:30; and Thursdays 12:30-1:30.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Mike Fitzgerald
