Studio Operations – topics course, senior studies, and apprentices
Topics (art-340)
Students enrolled in the topics course will be using the patio studio as their main classroom and studio space. If a student’s research requires the use of a classroom studio, that student must make arrangements with and get permission and training from the area professor. All students are expected to be well versed on the requirements and limitation of the spaces they use and the processes they carry out.
Senior Studies (art-343)
Students enrolled in the senior studies course will be given a studio space to be used in accordance with the plan for their senior work – usually either the penthouse or the patio studio. Students may use a classroom studio in addition to their assigned student studio but must make arrangements with and get permission and training from the area professor. All students are expected to be well versed on the requirements and limitation of the spaces they use and the processes they carry out.
The Fifth Year Apprenticeship
Those chosen to be apprentices are given a space in the penthouse studio for use during their apprenticeship. Those wanting to use classroom studios as well must make arrangements with and get permission and training from the area professor. Apprentices are expected to be well versed on the requirements and limitation of the spaces they use and the processes they carry out.
PATIO STUDIO AND PENTHOUSE STUDIO
Room Function/Limits
- All information regarding studio use policy and safe practices must be followed.
- The room may only be occupied if the airflow is ON. See posted schedule for this information.
- The patio and penthouse studios vary in function, and are limited to those students currently enrolled in the class that occupies the space, also apprentices.
Chemical Use Procedures
- Chemicals used in the patio and penthouse studio are limited to those listed in the Approved Chemicals List.
- Ventilation must be turned on if there is oil painting taking place, or an oil-based painting is drying. The switch is located near the door, and the vent is located on the West wall. The area leading to the vent should not be blocked.
- The only solvent allowed in the topics/penthouse studio is Gamsol and it must be used with ventilation, it must be stored in the flammable cabinet, and it should be re-used. Follow directions for Gamsol use.
- No dust producing processes, such as clay or woodworking, are allowed in these studios.
- No aerosol spraying is allowed in either the patio or the penthouse studio.
