Studio Operations – 4D
PHOTOGRAPHY:
-Photolab and Darkrooms
Room Function/Limits
- All information regarding studio use policy and safe practices must be followed.
- The room may only be occupied if the airflow is ON. See posted schedule for this information.
- The Darkroom is limited to students currently enrolled in photography, and topics students or senior studies students who have had the foundation photo course.
- The darkroom is limited to the photo processes taught in St. Olaf photo courses.
Chemical Use Procedures
- Chemicals used in the photography studio are limited to those listed in the Approved Chemicals List.
- The chemistry is to be mixed by lab assistants who have been trained to properly handle and mix.
- Anyone mixing or pouring chemicals must wear proper safety protection: gloves, chemical splash-resist goggles, and waterproof apron.
- Practice good housekeeping. Spills must be wiped up immediately; large spills should be absorbed with hazorb pads, which are kept in both dark rooms and the lab. No spill should be allowed to dry, which causes the chemical to turn into dust. Clothing or skin that has been splashed with chemicals must be flushed immediately with clear water, and then cleaned with soap and water.
- Liquid chemicals, rather than powder, are purchased - but if powder is used in any situation, it should be mixed in the lab at the slot vent. Avoid skin contact, and clean up dust and spills scrupulously.
- Dilute or mix liquid chemicals at slot vent. Always add acid to water, never the reverse.
- Label all containers, and never store photo chemicals in glass jars.
- Use gloves and tongs to transfer prints from baths.
- Fixer should be disposed of via the silver recovery system at the end of the vented sink.
- Chemicals other than fixer may be put down the drain when spent, but only after being diluted (as in, for use) as well as using lots of fresh running water while draining to allow further dilution.
Specific Operations
- Toning must always be done near a slot vent (sink or other) as the process emits toxic gases.
- When doing cyanotype, use chemicals very sparingly and run lots of fresh water as you clean your brush and container.
DIGITAL MEDIA:
-Digital Studio
Room Function/Limits
- All information regarding studio use policy and safe practices must be followed.
- The room may only be occupied if the airflow is ON. See posted schedule for this information.
- Use of the digital studio is limited to students currently enrolled in a digital class, and to topics or senior studies students who have already taken a class that covers the digital technique in which they intend to work.
- The door to the digital lab must not be propped open, and students should not allow access to students not currently enrolled in the class.
- No dust producing or fume producing processes may take place in the digital lab.
Chemical Use Procedures
- Toner is the only chemical used in the digital lab. Only those trained to change and recycle the toner cartridge should do so. Notify your professor or a technician if a toner cartridge is spent, or if toner has spilled.
- Spilled toner needs to be cleaned up with a special vacuum cleaner/filter. See the professor or a technician immediately if this happens.
-Lighting Studio (in Media Room)
Room Function/Limits
- All information regarding studio use policy and safe practices must be followed.
- The room may only be occupied if the airflow is ON. See posted schedule for this information.
- The lighting studio (within the media room, DC101) is available to students currently enrolled in an art class, and ONLY for coursework related to that class. The media room worker on duty shall handle all lighting equipment and backdrops, and check out items needed for a shoot.
- Users must sign up on the schedule located outside the media room to reserve the space.
- Use of the lighting studio for purposes outside the art department is not allowed. If you have questions contact Kate Fisher (fisherk@stolaf.edu).
- Department sanctioned photo shoots will be scheduled for the documentation of student artworks. See the department website for information.
Chemical Use Procedures
- There is no chemical use allowed in the media room except chemicals that need no ventilation, no dust collection, no rapid air exchange. The studio is NOT set up with an air exchange rate that allows for oil painting or any fume or dust producing processes.
- Chemicals used in the lighting studio are limited to those listed in the Approved Chemicals List.
Specific Operations
- The media room worker on duty assists by handling the equipment during a lighting session to prevent damage due to improper use of equipment.
-Media Cage (in Media Room)
Room Function/Limits
- All information regarding studio use policy and safe practices must be followed.
- The room may only be occupied if the airflow is ON. See posted schedule for this information.
- The media cage (within the media room, DC101) is to be occupied only by media room workers, staff/faculty, and advanced students trained on the use of the large format printers.
- The large format printers are to be operated only by those properly trained to do so, and includes media room workers, staff/faculty, or advanced students with permission from the photo professor – but in the case of an advanced student, use is only allowed when the media cage is being staffed.
- The media equipment is intended specifically for use by art faculty and staff, art apprentices, and students currently enrolled in an art class (ONLY for coursework related to that class.)
- The cage is not to be left unlocked and unattended.
- The computerized checkout system should only be used by media room workers, Kate, and Patty.
- Media worker schedules are posted outside the door to the media room.
Chemical Use Procedures
- There is no chemical use allowed in the media room except chemicals that need no ventilation, no dust collection, no rapid air exchange – such as ink cartridges for printers. The studio is NOT set up with an air exchange rate that allows for oil painting or any fume or dust producing processes.
- Chemicals used in the media cage are limited to those listed in the Approved Chemicals List.
- Only those trained to change and recycle the ink cartridges should do so.
