She received an M.A. in Art History from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Kansas. She has taught in a post-doctorate position at the University of Washington in Seattle, and at Lewis & Clark University, University of Oregon, and Dartmouth College before that. She is currently working on issues relating to the interplay of text and image of a Buddhist grotto site in Sichuan, China.
