After earning a degree in mathematics at Southern Methodist University, Reed completed Ph.D. studies in religion at the University of Iowa. She has studied Taiwanese faith healing, the images and roles of women in Chinese Taoism, and Chinese Buddhism. She has coauthored Culture and Customs of Taiwan with Gary Davison.
