Selected Scholarships and Sources of Funding for Study Abroad, Language Study

 

National Smart Grant (revolving)

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, also known as the National Smart Grant is available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.

 

Gilman International Scholarship Program (deadline 10.09.2007)

820 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000. Undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at 2-year or 4-year colleges or universities are eligible to apply.

Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 25 Critical Need Language Supplements will be offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Eligible Languages
Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for study of the principal modern languages of East and Southeast Asia such as:

Chinese

Vietnamese

bullet

Tibetan

bullet

Japanese

bullet

Indonesian

bullet

Thai

bullet

Korean

bullet

Khmer

bullet

Burmese

 

bullet

Malaysian

 

Consideration will be given to other East or Southeast Asian languages on an individual basis. Grants will not be made for the study of Asian languages not in current use.


 

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a grant, an applicant must:

Be pursuing an academic, professional or business career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language

bullet

Have a college undergraduate degree

bullet

Be at or near an advanced level in the language as defined below

bullet

Be able to devote oneself exclusively to language study during the term of the grant; grants are not made for part-time study

bullet

Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States

"Professional or business career" includes, but is not limited to, careers in computer science, engineering, international business, journalism, law, medicine, NGO work, and teaching.

Definition of Advanced Level

An applicant for a Blakemore Freeman Fellowship must have:

A minimum of three academic years of regular language study at the college level (example: completed 3rd year Chinese); or

bullet

A minimum of one academic year of full-time intensive language study at the college-level; or

bullet

Provide proof of equivalent competency (click here for language evaluation form that can be used to satisfy this requirement)

Selection Criteria

bullet

A focused, well-defined career objective involving Asia in which regular use of the language is an important aspect

bullet

The potential to make a significant contribution to a field of study or area of professional or business activity in an Asian country

bullet

Prior experience in the Asian country or involvement or participation in activities related to the country

bullet

Good academic, professional or business background, appropriate to the career program

 

Fulbright Scholar Program

(Deadline October of each year)

 

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) (deadline 3.3.2008)

This one-year award is for students in the humanities, professional schools, and social sciences who need to acquire a high level of competency in a modern foreign language for their field. You must show potential for high achievement and plan to enroll in a language and an area studies course of the award. Students applying to master’s or doctoral programs are eligible. To be considered, U.S. citizens and permanent residents must complete the appropriate fellowship sections of the Graduate Application for Admission and Fellowships and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the March 3, 2008, deadline.
