Author’s Statement
When thinking about what I wanted to do for my senior Asian Studies
seminar project, I had three elements that I wanted to include.
First I knew that I wanted to do some work with Kurosawa because
I have been watching and collecting his films throughout my time
at St. Olaf. My passion for his film grew from noticing the
intricacies of his art and the lasting worldwide impact he has
made on film. Secondly, during my four years as a student I have
worked with technology and language for the Asian Studies and
Japanese departments, acquiring many skills. I wanted to be able
to use and showcase these skills in my final project. Having seen
the use of short clips from video and television during my summers
and part time work, I realized the potential that Kurosawa films had.
Finally, I wanted to make a product that would be useful to
students and professors for years to come, and not just write a
paper that would collect dust. All three of these elements could be
incorporated into a website/database. I decided to create this
website with those things in mind.
