Periodic Peregrine Updates
Look here for periodic updates on the location and status of the Thor, Odin, Loki and Lars!
Our peregrines have flown! Occasionally if our falcons have been sighted around the Northfield area, there might be an update. Otherwise we'll have to wait for their return to St. Olaf!
On May 21, 2003, the following e-mail was sent by Bud Tordoff, ornithologist who orchestrated our peregrine falcon release two years ago.
"I just returned from Hastings, where I was with my secret weapon, Matt Solensky. Within the first ten minutes, he found the male peregrine perched under the bridge, saw a movement of a second bird near it, hiked out on the bridge, and found the scrape with the female sitting in it. It is in sand on a girder right where I said it would be, the downstream side of the middle pier (the one in the middle of the river, second one from the south end). Matt could not see the whole scrape, but thinks there are no eggs in it. About 10 minutes later, we saw a copulation on a tower at the Hastings end of the bridge. The male then perched again on the middle pier and Matt, unbelievably, read its band, gold band on right leg (Norm, the leg is yellow all the way down as you insisted!), black over green on left leg, U/A, Loki, hacked at St.Olaf College in 2001. The female is also two years old, so this is probably a first nest for each of them, perhaps explaining the lateness. (Female is 27/A, Penny, fledged in 2001 at NSP Sherco, Becker MN). Hard to predict if they will follow through, but the copulation seems hopeful. If they do nest, they will still have young well after the July 1 start of bridge repairs. Very satisfying to have both birds there finally identified."
