A Southern African plant grown from a bulb for its large red, pink, or white trumpet-shaped flowers
that appear facing in opposite directions at the head of a single stalk. Latin name Amaryllis
belladonna. Also called belladonna lily.

A tropical American plant related to the southern African amaryllis. Genus Hippeastrum.

Late 18th century. Via modern Latin from, ultimately, Greek Amarullis, name of a shepherdess
in pastorals such as those of Theocritus, Virgil, and Ovid.
