Biomedical Studies Concentration
The Biomedical Studies Concentration is intended as a plan of study that will enhance
students’ preparation for careers including traditional areas of healthcare such as
human and veterinary medicine and dentistry, but also complementary professions like
chiropractic, various therapies (physical, occupational, speech, music, dance, etc.),
nursing, and work in hospital administration, hospital ministry, and biomedical ethics.
Students can develop their own Biomedical Studies Concentration by designing and
implementing a plan of study suited to their career goals. The contract is developed
with the assistance of the Piper Center for Vocation and Career and Jean Porterfield,
Director of Biomedical Studies. The concentration can be earned in conjunction with
any major. As a part of the contract, students are required to:
- Explore 3 potential careers in the healthcare arena
- Attend a total of 4-6 career-related sessions approved by the Biomedical
Studies Coordinator
- Conduct 2 Informational Interviews with professionals in your areas of interest
- Keep a Career Journal
- Take 5 courses/activities and complete a senior capstone project
By the senior year, students will have completed a concentration that allows for the development of individual interests and prepares each to pursue further education and/or work in the specific healthcare related fields of study. Students may find the concentration helpful in exploring career choices and developing long-term goals. More information can be obtained from Jean Porterfield in RHS 428, utilizing the website or visiting the Piper Center. Experiential learning is an essential component of your biomedical studies concentration.
