Preface

By Ted Johnson, St. Olaf College

“Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you will reach your destiny.”
-Carl Schurz

This advising manual is intended for St. Olaf students who are in the process of determining what career path they will take in the health professions arena. The focus will be on health professions other than becoming a physician. An advising manual focused on allopathic medicine, Preparation for a Career in Medicine, is available online throught the Health Professions Committee website or request a copy from Ted Johnson. The path to a career in the health professions can be full of uncertainty, anxiety, self-doubt and sometimes disappointment. You need to explore the variety of health professions and determine your talents, abilities, and interests. Once you determine which career path optimally fits you, implement an academic plan of study, gain experience in that vocational area, and develop career goals.

The purpose of this document is to provide rudimentary information for the use of students interested in a career in the health professions. Any mistakes, omissions, or misinformations are the author’s. Any unanswered questions or concerns may be
directed to Ted Johnson, Jean Porterfield (Biomedical Studies Director) or to anyone of the Health Professions Committee (HPC).
