Introduction
Interesting secondary metabolites of the invertebrates of the phylum Bryozoa have been studied in recent years.
Certain metabolites have shown antibacterial activity, inhibiting plaque formation in certain influenza strains. Unfortunately, only minute amounts have
been obtained from nature. The objective of this
research was to synthesize 5 of these compounds in much greater quantities:
- flustramines A (1) and B (2)
- flustramides A (3) and B (4)
- debromoflustramine B (5)
To date debromoflustramine B has been synthesized by a Claisen rearrangement as the key step with a 4.4% yield. This
has also been utilized to obtain flustramine B. It was in their interest to develop a total synthesis to these compounds
and then extend that to a general procedure in the total synthesis of marine bryozoan alkaloids.
